WEDNESDAY, December 28 Holy Innocents

Matthew 2:13-18. When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men.

One day I casually admired a silver cross worn by an adult student in one of my college English classes. She related that it had been left on her doorstep the day after her two sons died in a fire. She says that she has worn it constantly ever since.

In subsequent conversations with her, I have come to admire this woman and her enduring faith. She “gets it” in a way I am not sure I would be able to do, were even one of my children to perish. She understands that her boys, as she calls them, have gone ahead into eternity and that she will, with patience, catch up to them. For now, she works and studies—lives, loves, and learns. Like the Holy Innocents we remember today, her children died too soon. It’s a cruel injustice that challenges our deepest beliefs. I hope that the mothers of Bethlehem, like my student, found strength in their faith and had loving family and friends to grieve with them.

The Kingdom of Heaven Belongs To Such As These

Dec 28, 2011 at 6:17 am

Written by emeline,

Today, we pray for children everywhere. We walk with those parents who have lost children either by natural means or during some tragic events. God will give them strength to overcome their lossess. May they be confident of meeting with them again like the mother in today's reference.

Lord, we ask for patience, love and kindness as we deal with our children from day today. Amen!
Grace Alone

Written by Elaine,

We live, and carry on, and die, by the grace of God alone!
My son went ahead 4 years ago and I know Jesus welcomed him Home immediately as he crashed and died. My heart sings with the hymn writer, "O to grace a greater debtor daily I'm constrained to be."
Too soon?

Written by William,

I understand today's message, however, I'm always taken back when someone is mentioned as having "died too soon". I like to think that God has a time and reason for taking all of us and that we may not be able to understand these reasons. We never hear, for example, that anyone "died too late" do we?

Written by Junelle,

I think the feeling of someone having died too soon is a reflection of the person that is still living, an expression of grief. Also, I think the usual order of things is that children outlive their parents and when this does not happen, it feels like the child died too soon. My son died when he was 26 and it felt too soon. But my father died at 93 and that too felt too soon.
