WEDNESDAY, February 2 The Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Luke 2:22-40. Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word.

The paua is a kind of abalone. The shell’s exterior is rough and unremarkable. However, on the inside the shell is iridescent. It shines with wonderful colors, like a rainbow. The Maori (indigenous people of New Zealand) use the paua to inlay their carvings.

Older people whose bodies are breaking down may look worn and wrinkled on the outside, but when you get to know their inner life and their faith, it is another story.

In the story in Luke, Mary and Joseph take the child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem “to present him to the Lord.” While they are at the temple, Mary and Joseph find time to honor an older man. The prayerful Simeon takes the child Jesus in his arms, and his words reveal his inner life of faith. He is one who has a rainbow in his heart. He has believed God’s word. In Jesus, Simeon sees God’s bright promises holding true, not just for his own people, but for everyone.

Written by KJaye,

This comment is so true: "Older people whose bodies are breaking down may look worn and wrinkled on the outside, but when you get to know their inner life and their faith, it is another story."

I just recently experienced this through my 86 year old mother's final weeks of her life on earth. Her unwavering faith was beautiful to witness. I can only hope I show as much faith during illness as she did.

As I write this, there is a double-rainbow outside my window.
