Mark 10:1-16. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.
Jesus wants his disciples to know the embracing love of God for everyone. Jesus speaks sternly to them for turning little children away. He goes on to teach that because of their total trust, little children show us how to be part of God’s kingdom.
I have been looking at pictures of our first grandchild sent through the miracle of the Internet. She is a very little child, born on the first Sunday of Advent. One of her names is an ancient Tongan word and is associated with the radiance either of the moon or the sun when it first appears. If you like, she is called “First Light.”
The pictures of our little one are often sent with amusing captions. The latest picture is called “living the life.” Here she is sleeping peacefully in wonderful abandon, one arm arched above her. Meditating on the text and looking at the little child bring joy and new light to me. I am encouraged to live the life of total trust in the God I see in Jesus. Total trust—those are my words for today. I offer them to you.
