Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

WEDNESDAY, January 26 (Timothy and Titus, Companions of Saint Paul)

Isaiah 49:1-12. …saying to the prisoners, “Come out,” to those who are in darkness, “Show yourselves.”

Over the past thirty years, much has been written about church growth and the drop in mainline church membership. I read what pertains to the Episcopal Church, and what I read is usually accompanied by complaints about the direction being taken and some aspect of inclusivity.

When we in the church feel weak or threatened, we tend to be a selective bunch. It has been over thirteen years since a new presiding bishop, Edmond Lee Browning, issued a historic pronouncement from the pulpit of Washington National Cathedral: “There shall be no outcasts in this church.” Yet, in many parishes it is a struggle to cast our loving, accepting eyes on all those around us.

At every vestry retreat I have ever attended on the subject of church growth, we have been warned that growth brings change and that change can be scary. Unfortunately, many of us have taken that warning to heart and have opted for comfort rather than change.

It is time to reflect on today’s verse from Isaiah and our call to proclaim, “Come out…Show yourselves.” (1998)

Written by Barbara Summers,

I am not Episcopalian, but I think the Episcopal Church, in general, has set an excellent example of inclusiveness.
I joined the Episcopalian Church because of its inclusiveness.

Written by Jeanette Wishall,

I had been raised Catholic but left that church as a young adult in college. Now, years later as a parent, I wanted to show my daughter the positive aspects of faith and religion. And it was the inclusivity I observed in the Episcopalian Church that brought me to the church and to seek baptism for my daughter and a re-confirmation for myself.

Written by Joanne Mershon,

For me, I need a group that's inclusive. As a recovering alcoholic and a Christian, I have to stay concerned with my own behavior, and whether my behavior reflects Christ. To my understanding of the gospels Christ was inclusive, therefore I want to be inclusive, and especially loving to those people who need love the most. This is never easy, but the way of Christ is the way of the cross. I can't reflect Christ on my own power, but only as I give up control & relinquish my will to that indwelling Spirit of Life. It's a process. Fear kept me drunk for many years, so when my behavior is based in fear, I have to ask myself if it is God or my own self who is in control. It's a daily stru*gle.
