WEDNESDAY, January 6, The Epiphany

Matthew 2:1-12. Wise men from the East came to Jerusalem asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we have observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage."

Every night, I step outside my simple room in Sudan and survey the dark African skies above me. The skies here are incredibly clear, the stars incredibly close. Most nights, the Milky Way streaks its way across the velvety skies, looking like soft cotton candy, close enough to touch.

Like the wise men, I search the skies, looking for a sign that I am in the right place, following the right star, hoping that my life and ministry in Sudan are to the glory of God and that through them, I am paying homage to the King.

I look to the skies as well as a way to ground myself, for many of the stars I see here (especially the constellation Orion) are the same I see in the U.S., which means that wherever I am, I am home. I travel tens of thousands of miles each year as a missionary, always following the same stars, always for that one purpose: to serve God.

I know that if I follow faithfully, no matter how hard the journey, I will never be lost.

Written by Richard H. Schmidt, Editor, Forward Day by Day,

When I was a missionary in Nigeria in 2001, I had a very positive experience, but I sometimes felt a searing loneliness, being thousands of miles away from my friends and loved ones. I remember walking outside in the middle of the night and looking up to find a familiar constellation. I would say to myself that possible my wife, who had remained behind in St. Louis, would walk outside nine hours later and look up at the same constellation. It made me feel not quite so cut off from her.

Written by Jenny,

For years, I have often gone outside at night to look at the moon and will call my daughter miles away across the US to go out and do the same...we talk as we are looking at the moon together. I am often reminded that my Jesus looked at the same moon and stars as I gaze upon...makes me feel connected in a very real way.

Written by Mark,

The night sky offers transcendence in both space and time, as the scripture writers also likely witnessed them as well.

Written by Lauren Stanley,

Driving home from a celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany tonight, I got to peak out the car window at the stars several times, and once again found my sustenance there. God is leading all of us, if only we will take the time to look, listen and follow.
