Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Matthew 25:31-46. Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.
Mattie and her husband Bert were just passing through town when Bert had a heart attack that left him an invalid. For two years they lived on Social Security in a walk-up flat in a public housing project. Bert died, and the county buried him in a cardboard coffin in the indigent cemetery. Mattie worried about the condition of his grave.
She had a regular visitor from the church and always asked him how Bert's grave looked. Was there grass on it? Neither the county nor the cemetery operators cared about Bert's grave, and outsiders were forbidden to do planting. Early one morning Mattie's friend sneaked into the cemetery with a rake and seed. Soon the grass came, and Mattie was relieved.
That person inspired the founding of the Cup of Cold Water Society. I invite you to join. There are no dues, no officers, no meetings--a thoroughly satisfactory organization. The rules are that when you know someone is in need, maybe for something so simple as a cup of cold water, you help and then tell no one you did it. God will know. (1987)
