Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
2 Corinthians 7:2-16. But God, who consoles the downcast, consoled us by the arrival of Titus.
I have found that an attitude of gratitude lifts me from victim to beloved. Nonetheless, I still have black cloud days, days of embarrassments, ego bumps, and thwarted plans, as well as days of painful grief.
But whenever I am downcast, invariably along comes Titus. Condolences assure me that, though newly widowed, I am not alone. My grandson walks in saying, "Nana, what smells so good?" And that's when I am making not chocolate chip cookies, but a vegetable stew with turnips.
Today while I was explaining to a new volunteer at our soup kitchen the importance of hand washing and gloves, she pointed out that, with gloved hands, I had just picked up trash from the floor. Not only was I embarrassed, but I felt that, had Jesus returned at that moment, I would have been doomed. And I let despair color my day.
At first I could find no Titus. But he was there. The lead tenor of our local opera company, Violetta's Alfredo in La Traviata, even more attractive in person, affirmed my importance by introducing himself to me.
God always sends Titus. It is up to us to see him.
