Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 4:38-44. They wanted to prevent him from leaving them.
In spite of all the things Jesus said about his need to return to the Father, people tried to keep him with them. The crowds repeatedly sought him out, even when it was clear that he needed a place apart to recover and to pray. His disciples were no different. Peter wanted to pitch a tent to house the transfigured Jesus and the prophets who kept him company. Mary Magdalene would have embraced his wounded feet when she recognized him near the empty tomb on Easter morning.
There is a lovely medieval image of the Ascension, with Jesus hidden by a cloud as he ascends into heaven, except for his feet which are dangling through the mist. I imagine the assembled disciples raising their arms upward, as if trying to catch him by the feet and drag him down again. But that was not how it was to be. Jesus’ continued presence among us is simultaneously hard to grasp and absolutely down-to-earth, in the mystery of ordinary bread and wine shared by a faithful people in his name—the very body of Christ himself.
