WEDNESDAY, May 19 (Dunstan)

Ephesians 4:1-16. ...with all humility and gentleness.

This passionate plea to the church is as pertinent today as when it was received in Ephesus. It makes the ultimate demand on each of us to lead a life worthy of our calling. What part does humility play in that life?

Humility, true humility, is the deep knowledge that God is to be sought, and found, and served in every person. Humility bows its heart to all, in acknowledgment of the presence of the Holy there.

Humility can be silent in the vestry meeting, awaiting the truth that may emerge from another's perspective. Humility is the teacher who gladly learns from the student. Humility subverts pride and self-righteousness--especially when one is right.

The gift of humility comes from the heart of Jesus Christ to you. Jesus knows that humility will help you see others as he sees them, to hear in them his truth, and to learn from it. If we believe that every person, made in the image of God, bears some part of the truth the whole community needs, then humility before others can be the key to truth.

Think of someone with whom you disagree on an important issue. Let the truth of this urgent passage work its way with you. (2000)

Written by Sheri Christi,

All the meditations are so beautiful; They open the heart and mind. In the final analysis it is love, gentleness and humility that matters. I have found that mean people are really often in pain (mental or physical) and don't know how to deal with it. Jesus, the wonderful counselor, shows us by example how to be live for God and be a good human being, but putting it all into practice in the challenge of the life and it is difficult.
