Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 8:16-25. For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light.
Newspapers and blogs are full of disturbing reports of clergy who for years physically and sexually abused children and adolescents under their care, and equally disturbing reports of attempts of high church officials who tried to cover up such conduct, to hide the perpetrators rather than recompense and restore the victims.
The word “apocalypse,” so closely connected to notions of God’s final judgment, comes from the Greek word meaning “uncovering”—the definitive reversal of all human cover-ups. For as the perpetrators of clergy abuse and those who have protected them in the name of the church have learned to their shame, nothing is hidden that shall not be made manifest.
Pray for the victims of sexual violence in all times and places. Confess that we shift problems rather than solve them. Pray that we may be guided by the cries of those in pain.
Only by refusing to think about things as they are can we remain indifferent.
