WEDNESDAY, November 11 (Martin of Tours) Veterans' Day (U.S.) Remembrance Day (Canada)

Psalm 82. You are gods, and all of you children of the Most High; nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, and fall like any prince.

Leila was in her eighties when I, in my mid-twenties, was her priest. Half of the altar guild, Leila always had fresh flowers on the altar--all of them home-grown. Every Sunday after the liturgy those flowers found their way to those who were ill or home-bound.

One year when Veterans' Day fell on a Sunday, Leila asked me to accompany her to the churchyard cemetery. There she lovingly placed a vase of flowers, complete with poppies, on the grave of her baby brother. The government-issued stone bore a simple cross, her brother's name, rank, the dates 1900-1918, and the inscription "The Great War." After a prayer, she remarked how she "sorely missed him to this day."

He never made it to the front, dying of influenza on board ship en route to France. There was no trace of bitterness or irony in her voice. She told story after story of their younger days and they were all joyful.

Today we honor those who gave the full measure as well as living veterans who have given so much to ensure our freedom. May we be worthy of their sacrifices.

Written by Will,

O LORD our governor, in you alone do we find safety and peace. Today we remember the fallen, help us not to take our liberty for granted. Comfort the families of the victims at Fort Hood, Texas, and all families suffering because of war. Through Him who gave the ultimate sacrifice, AMEN.
Thank you to those who fought, those who served...

Written by Robert Lebby,

Back in late spring of this year, a friend of mine, an ex-Marine, took a flight home to visit family. After the flight landed, and, as he was waiting to deplane, he captured a somber picture that I can only describe here.

As he looked through the window at the plane next to his, with the rain falling like tears from heaven, a dozen police officers, soldiers, pilots, and airport workers surrounded the baggage conveyor, saluting the flag-draped casket of a fallen American hero being brought one step closer to his final resting place.

For me, the scene is one for which there are no words worthy to express the gratitude I felt as an American, a Christian, and a veteran who served during more peaceful times, and who lives a life of freedom because of the sacrifices made by men and women such as this. Their sacrifice is, in part, about our freedom to worship a God who gave his only Son to die for an even more noble cause - the gift of eternal life.

I thank the soldiers who fought and died to keep our country free. And I give thanks to God for the sacrifice of his Son, Jesus Christ, so that we might have life eternal with Him in heaven.
