Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Psalm 130. Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice.

Easy good nature was one of the marks of the age out of which we are passing. We presumed to be easy-going with God. We thought that having improved ourselves so much, it was no great step to be in God’s amiable company. We puffed ourselves up with the saying: “Every day, in every way, I am growing better and better.”  Then the bubble burst.

Four hundred delegates convened in Oxford in July 1937 for the World Conference on Church, Community, and State. The leader of the Conference wrote to the delegates, saying in effect: Do not dare come to Oxford in any mood of self-confidence. The present state of  apostasy and frustration calls for whole-hearted repentance. Only out of a deep distrust and despair of self can the word be spoken which the world needs.

Do not think it morbid to be in the depths. Every sinner must begin there. And knowing oneself to be there, rather than skimming gaily in the shallows, is a healthy sign. The first step in repentance is for the sinner to know he has no dignity left. All that is left is a cry.

But God never yet failed to hear and answer a cry out of the depths. (1939)

Written by Steve Doutt,

This meditation echoes the human situation. Due to the size of the planet and the nature of space and time, I can never know what is happening everywhere at all times. Even when I have no knowledge of bad news, something evil is happening somewhere to someone.

It is hard to be joyful, while keeping in mind the suffering of others. My joy comes through the faith and hope, taught to me by Jesus, that we can do better.
History lesson----remind us what was going on

Written by carolyn,

I read the devotional today and think to 1939 and what was going on in the world, in the nation, in the church. Any insights, historian friends? WW I, coming off the great depression. What do you think set the tone for the meditation?

Written by Lois,

I know I try and be joyful but I am not perfect. Then I am sad and depressed but God lifts me up.Repentance is necessary in order to be forgiven. Forgiveness is healing as stated in the book I am reading by Russ Parker.May God pull me out of the depths and I can gladly serve Him through caring about others.

Written by Howard,

Steve, you are right on. Even today more horrible things are happening to people around the world. We seemingly have no direct control to fix them or help their situation other than powerful prayer for them through God's intercessor, Jesus.
Returning to grace

Nov 24, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Written by Gaye Anne,

God's mercy and pardon is mine but it is returned to Him by giving to others. Self congratulations and trying to make myself feel good is childish. We have only the "right" to acknowledge the immense grace we have been given. When I am truly thankful I have worth and may then be a vessel of His love.
