WEDNESDAY, November 25 (James Otis Sargent Huntington)

1 Peter 2:1-10. Proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Our kids are coming home for Thanksgiving, an idea I still find a bit disconcerting. For so many years we were the ones heading "over the river and through the woods" to grandmother and grandfather's house. At least I am not a grandfather yet, I say to myself as I habitually turn on the porch light at sundown.

Suddenly I am struck by how many other porch lights are glowing along the street--welcoming lights to children and grandchildren heading home for the holiday, no doubt. Moms and dads do that--help light the way home. I cannot remember a single night when the porch light was not on for me, or my siblings, if we were out for the evening. It is perhaps the memories of our lives that make us who we are.

The essence of Peter's letter is that the God who made us and loves us is constantly calling us out of darkness into the light of Christ. Certainly that reminder, on this night, will convey a double meaning: first, to be thankful for the light of Christ; and second, to be people who allow the light of Christ to shine through us to others.

Written by Andrea,

This will be the first Thanksgiving in many years that my older brother is not "coming home" to my parents' house. He passed away this summer at age 50. We were blessed to have had him in our lives, even though it seems like much too short a time. This meditation struck a chord with me, though maybe not the intended one. Thanksgiving blessings to all Forward Day by Day writers and readers!

Written by Jeanette,

As a child I never had the privielege of going to grandma's for Thanksgiving as I lived in an orphange. My mother never had the porch light on me when I was out late. Today I instictivley have all my children & grandchildren gather at my house for turkey and all the trimmings. I am most grateful this Thanksgiving for God's guiding light in my life. After years of wandering in the wilderness, He has helped me find Grace Episcopal church where I truly feel God's light and presence. Reading the Forward Movement Meditations and Bible Reading light my path every morning. Blessed be to God.

Written by Ellen Connelly,

For me it's down to the airport and on to the plane for Thanksgiving with my inlaws and their children, grandchildren and a huge assortment of sisters, brothers, cousins, uncles and aunts. I am deeply thankful that this family counts me as one of their own. Thankful too for the daily meditations, and pray that my porch light will go with me and shine wherever I am. Pray for peace.

I will spend Thanksgiving with my family of inlaws which includes great grandparents, grandparents, parents, a lot of kids and a huge assortment of sisters, brothers, uncles, cousins and aunts. Written by R Seguin,

It was during my years living in New York City, not far from Grace Church on Broadway, that I discovered God's light from this beautiful welcoming church, where I would stop for quiet time. I feel as though Grace Church was a blessing, and I will never forget it. Nor would I ever go to NYC and not go by Grace for a visit. Home. A Happy & Peaceful Thanksgiving to all!
