Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Ephesians 2:13-22. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances.
I like to hear what's going on around me, so I hate the whole concept of "noise-cancelling headphones." It seems foolish to allow someone else to decide, on my behalf, what is noise and what is not.
All human interaction--even apparent "noise"--holds potential for being music. If we try to cancel out the sound of human suffering, of fear, of reliance on God and others, then we miss opportunities to witness the transformative power of God.
With the presence of Jesus--God incarnate--in our lives, we can find peace not in spite of the noise, but within that noise, "for he is our peace." Hostility between the human and the divine, between the spiritual and the physical, vanishes. Ordinary experiences become holy. Human encounters speak of God.
If I let others decide what is noise, such experiences would be blocked out. And I would hate to miss that beautiful incarnational music.
