Psalm 119:145-176. All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal. (NIV)

In 2008, a museum discovered a previously unknown piece of music, apparently written by Mozart, as it is undeniably in the composer's own hand. A researcher said of the music, dated in the late eighteenth century, "This is absolutely new. We have new music here."

It amazes me that people will describe something from the 1700s as "new" just because they've only now discovered it. And yet, the presence of God, which predates human existence, often feels new to us. When human losses come, the fleeting nature of our priorities becomes obvious. Perhaps we begin to see God only after those losses hit home.

In such circumstances, people begin to realize that only God and God's priorities endure in eternity. When all our human priorities are endangered, we remember suddenly, "All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal." When we first see God clearly, we think of the music we're hearing as new because we have just rediscovered it. In fact, though, that haunting music goes way, way back. It was written before any of us existed. It is written in God's own hand.

Written by JoAnn B. Jones,

I fear that the reordering of one's priorities in the face of loss ,the writer's perspective on this passage, is too narrow. Throughout Psalm 119, the psalmist is exalting in the power and strength of God's law and how God's law strenthens the psalmist. The psalmist also writes in the present, as if in the very presence of God and so illumines one vital aspect of the eternity of God's word and law that this writer misses: the eteranl nature of God's word and law does reach back to the past, but extends into the future, indeed into eternity.

This psalm is rather long, yet poignant. verses 145-176 held special meaning for me...today.

Written by Kathleen Thompson,

I often underline my Bible verses and add a date in the margin. As I re-read this passage tonight, I observed several underlined phrases, and as I looked at the dates, I saw reflected the times that I really needed God's guidance and spiritual help as I faced some very real enemies.

God brought me through those times successfully and as I read these verses again today, with a different set of circumstances, worries, doubts and frustrations, I can remember that God was my answer in the past, and I have no reason to doubt that He will be there with me in these present tribulations.
