WEDNESDAY, September 23

Matthew 5:38-48. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

One day the intercessor was reciting the prayers of the people and wanted to pray for some Americans who had been ambushed and killed overseas. Cautiously he said, "And let us remember those seven Americans who were so...seriously eliminated...and for those who eliminated them."

All of us in church chuckled at his use of the delicate phrase "seriously eliminated," but even in his awkward manner this intercessor got it right when he added the phrase "and those who eliminated them."

We will often be at odds with someone. Sometimes we don't know the name of this person, as in this prayer. More often this person is close to us. In either case, Jesus makes it clear how we should behave to-ward those who persecute us: we are to pray for them.

A friend once told me that when we pray for someone, that person no longer remains our enemy. I personally have found that praying does not make someone a friend. But it does make it possible for me to move on and not be poisoned by hatred. And so as much for myself as for them, I pray.

Written by mwk,

How often this bible phrase is hard to swallow. Especially if you were a vicitm of abuse. I had to stop talking to my father in my twenties, because he was so verbally abusive throughout my childhood. He lived in one end of the country (divorced from my Mom and remarried.) At the time I lived with my mom and she was remarried also. I was in high school and had an extremely low self esteem. Once in my twenties I realized where it stememd from and was only able to grow without any contact with my father. (This was hard for some peolpe to understand.) There was no love between us which is sad. I learned to accept this, he never understood till the day he died, why I stopped all communication. I tried writing letters, but the words didn't come out. It wasn't till his death that I was able to write a peom forgiving him and at that moment, I felt sorrow for his life and how unhappy he must have been. I prayed that with God he would find the happiness he never felt during his life. I don't regret the necessary separation I had to take from him, however I am very thankful that I was finally able to open my heart through God to forgive him. I feel nothing but compassion for him now. The phrase "I forgive you" is so healing for the giver, and hopefully for the receiver. (I don't think it is an automatic "fix" for the hurt caused, but it softens the heart to God's love.
and a chance for resentment and hurt to free themselves.
