WEDNESDAY, September 29 Saint Michael and All Angels

John 1:47-51. Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?”

Nathanael had been brought to Jesus by Philip, who first had prepared him to meet the man he thought must be the Messiah. Although not convinced, Nathanael was greeted by our Lord with the comment, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Completely disarmed, Nathanael responded with the question, “Where did you get to know me?” It was easy from then on for Nathanael to follow Jesus. People like to feel that others think well of them.

But Jesus did not want an easy victory. Commitment required more than that. So following that brief exchange, Jesus told Nathanael that he would see much more before he was really converted.

Many people join a church because of the friendly interest shown in them by a church member. Christian conviction, however, is not easily gained. It comes after we really yield to the living Lord and experience his sustaining grace in the trials we bear. God always knows us; what is more important, do we really know God, through his Son, Jesus Christ? (1964)

Knowing

Written by Stephen,

This entry points out a question. Which comes first, the chicken or the egg. Is the belief that God knows us or that we know God more important. Believing in the infinite, omnipotent God I must also believe God knows everything about me. In the same right, I as human cannot ever in this life know everything about God. So it might be said that God knowing me is a given. My knowing of God will always in this life be incomplete. However, I must learn and trust in order to know the little I can in order to grow. Knowing in this context is relationship. To get in the middle of this maybe the goal should be to know what God knows about me as I learn about God. Self knowledge is precious, but God knowledge about my self, my God and others is "priceless.
knowing and being known

Written by Tom P,

We can "know" only by faith however the creator, as we perceive him/her/ they/it, as with yesterday's meditation, can only be reflected by what we believe to be the essence, plan, design, and wishes of said benificent creator. It is our responsibility and obligation to reflect the positive and to challenge, indeed confront, that which is negative.

Good points Stephen. As I read this meditation I am called by Jesus to create places (or spaces in time) where people can develop their relationship with God; places where the Holy Spirit can work; places where conviction can grow.
