Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
John 11:1-16. Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?
Jesus had suggested that a visit be made to the home of Mary and Martha in Bethany to minister to their brother Lazarus. The disciples knew Lazarus was ill, but only Jesus realized he had died. Perhaps to reinforce the faith of his followers, Jesus had decided to bring Lazarus back to life. Because of a previous incidence of stoning, the disciples questioned the wisdom of returning to that region.
Now the truth comes out: Lazarus is dead. But he will be raised from the dead, and so important is this to Jesus that any thought of physical danger to himself becomes inconsequential.
Our response to human need often falters in the face of possible consequences. We love to count the cost. How many of us would risk physical danger to save a friend? Perhaps it is because we value our lives so much. Yet Christians should never fear death if they know they do God’s will. “For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake and for the sake of the gospel will save it” (Mark 8:35).
