Forward Today: See the joy that is coming!

December 23, 2025

Dear friends in Christ,

The lessons for morning prayer today, the last day of Advent, begin with gorgeous prophecy from Baruch. “Look toward the east, O Jerusalem, and see the joy that is coming to you from God…”

In these tumultuous times, it would be understandable if it were tough to muster joy this Christmas. But I urge you to do just that.

Two thousand years ago, God’s people lived under an oppressive regime. The world was violent and divided, and tyrannical rulers sought only their own enrichment. Into just this dire situation, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus was born in an inconsequential village in the shadow of Herod’s palace. God’s love is defined by compassion, not coercive violence.

This evening and tomorrow, churches around the world will fill with worshipers eager to remember the time when Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, came to live among us. Christmas joy is about more than family gatherings, presents, and familiar customs, though it encompasses those things. Our deepest joy stems from the realization that God does not abandon us, ever. He does not consign us to the squalor of our own sins. He does not relegate us to a world where tyrants reign supreme.

Instead, this Christmas we remember that God loves us so very much he is willing to live in solidarity with us. He offers us redemption. He manifests the reality that sin and death never have the last word. At Christmas, we celebrate the great gift of God’s grace and mercy in Jesus Christ. God’s love has the last word.

Blessings to you all. Have a happy Christmas.

In Christ’s peace,
