Dear friends in Christ,

When it comes to sharing our faith, Episcopalians are a reticent bunch. This Sunday’s Gospel challenges us to change, to grow, to brighten the world.
“No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (from Matthew 5).
Jesus is teaching us to bear witness — to let those around us see what God is doing in our lives. Of course, it’s never about us, but always about God. I know that I have at times grown in my own faith as I’ve beheld what God is doing in those around me. Their willingness to shine helped me find a deeper connection with God.
Perhaps you find yourself saying, “I wish the headlines weren’t all filled with bad news. Why is the world so endlessly gloomy?!” Jesus, as always, has the answer. Gloomy world? Add more light!
No one person can fix the problems of this world. But one person CAN shine forth with the radiant love of God and inspire someone else to carry on with hope and purpose.
A single candle can illumine a whole room. A single life can burn brightly with the love of God and brighten a whole community.
Be a lamp!
Yours faithfully,

Scott Gunn
Executive Director
