Forward Today: Looking back, moving forward

December 2, 2025

Dear friends in Christ,

This year marks the 90th year of Forward Movement’s ministry. We’ve been celebrating low key, because our aim is always to point to Jesus and to his church, not to ourselves. But I also want to acknowledge God’s presence in our ministry of inspiring disciples and empowering evangelists all these years.

In the 1930s, during a time of rising authoritarianism around the world, growing economic disparity, and increased secularization, the Episcopal Church was struggling. Unsure how to fix this, the General Convention chartered Forward Movement to “reinvigorate the life of the church.” That’s what we’ve been doing ever since through publications, conferences, courses, podcasts, apps, and more. I expect that list will grow longer in coming decades.

Today, I invite you to do three things to celebrate with us.

  • Watch a short video we made to give thanks for 90 years and express our hope for the future.
  • Pray for Forward Movement’s staff and board as we discern how God might be calling us to serve the church of today and tomorrow.
  • Support Forward Movement with a financial gift in thanksgiving for what has been done and what will be done in the future.

God is always steadfast in his love. I’m grateful for decades of steadfast work in response to God’s grace and mercy, and I pray that Forward Movement will keep us all moving onward for years to come.

Yours faithfully,
